As part of our Talking Geopolitical Podcast Series, we have talked to Ms Marie-Anne Coninsx, the first EU Ambassador for the Arctic and a Member of the Board of Directors of the International Polar Foundation. We discussed the current state of the EU Arctic Policy, emphasising the Arctic security challenges, especially after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. We touched upon the European Union’s role as a geopolitical actor and its struggle to gain influence in a region with more and more competitors, such as China and India. Ms Marie-Anne Coninsx also provided insights on Arctic governance and how the EU can deal with climate change and the “Arctic Paradox” it causes.
